Romain Grégoire just off the podium and left wanting more

# Romain Grégoire Falls Just Short at De Brabantse Pijl

In a gripping display of resilience and strategy, Romain Grégoire secured a frustrating fourth place at De Brabantse Pijl on the challenging Belgian roads this Friday, leaving him eager for more. The French cyclist was a prominent figure in the race, launching a decisive attack just 30 kilometers from the finish. Joined by several riders, Grégoire held his ground until the peloton caught up in the final moments. Despite finishing strong, he was ultimately edged out in a dramatic sprint finish.

As the cycling world gears up for the prestigious “Ardennes Classics,” De Brabantse Pijl served as a bridge between the recently concluded “Flemish Classics” and the upcoming races. The course tested riders with its rolling terrain and cobbled climbs, particularly on the three laps around Overijse, which showcased two paved hills alongside the challenging Hertstraat and Moskesstraat. Grégoire’s team, Groupama-FDJ United, focused on neutralizing attacks from rival teams early in the race, setting the stage for tactical maneuvers in the latter half.

Shortly before the second lap, the early break was reeled in, sparking a new dynamic in the race. Grégoire and his teammates positioned themselves effectively, with teammates Lorenzo Germani and Kevin Geniets playing crucial roles in setting up their leader for a powerful solo effort. Reflecting on the race’s strategy, Stéphane Goubert acknowledged, “With the shortened distance, the new course favours a sprint finish. Romain had to take the initiative, and he did, so credit to him.”

Grégoire’s determination was palpable as he navigated through a group of six leading riders. “The cooperation was good, but no one wanted to do too much. It wasn’t an easy final with that succession of climbs,” he said, analyzing his tactics. However, with the peloton breathing down their necks, the race dynamics shifted dramatically as they approached the final kilometers. “The long road with the headwind didn’t help,” Stéphane added, expressing disappointment as they anticipated the closing actions of other teams.

Tragically for the Frenchman, the collaboration among the leaders was not enough to fend off the peloton’s relentless pursuit. As the group neared the finish line, they were caught mere kilometers from victory. In the chaos that ensued, Grégoire managed to regroup himself for the final sprint, crossing the line in a commendable fourth place behind a peloton sprint won by Anders Foldager.

“I don’t have too many regrets because I don’t think I could have managed it differently, but I’m gutted,” Grégoire expressed candidly post-race. “I think I raced tactically well. I made the race hard and really put myself in a position to win. But it’s not just about having the legs; you also sometimes need a bit of luck to win, and I was missing some today.”

Stéphane reflected on the team’s overall performance, acknowledging the frustration of falling short: “This fourth place is frustrating because we clearly came for the win. Overall, the riders delivered at every stage where we asked them to be attentive. There’s nothing to criticize, and we need to keep this aggressive mindset.”

With the major Classics still on the horizon, the Groupama-FDJ United team remains committed to their ambitious racing strategy, determined to carry forward the aggressive spirit displayed at De Brabantse Pijl.
