Valentin Madouas takes sixteenth in an explosive Ronde

# Groupama-FDJ Team Battles Through in 110th Tour of Flanders: Madouas Secures 16th Place

In a dramatic showcase of resilience, the Groupama-FDJ cycling team faced challenges head-on during the 110th edition of the Tour of Flanders, held on Easter Sunday. The race, spanning 278 kilometers between Antwerp and Oudenaarde, witnessed a fierce competition, where French rider Valentin Madouas finished in an impressive 16th place, despite earlier setbacks. Romain Grégoire and Axel Huens followed closely, claiming the 22nd and 23rd spots respectively.

The day began with a mix of excitement and adversity as the iconic route featured familiar cobbled climbs, including the famous Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg, both tackled twice. A decisive break presented itself 100 kilometers from the finish, leading to a split in the peloton that left the Groupama-FDJ riders stranded in a second group. A breakaway of thirteen riders capitalized on a brief semi-neutralization in the peloton, beginning their ascent of the Oude Kwaremont with a notable lead.

Groupama-FDJ’s struggles were compounded when Axel Huens attempted to position himself for the race but was forced out of contention due to interference from another rider. As tensions mounted within the bunch, the pace intensified, eventually leading to a critical split. “There is always that little something missing,” Madouas reflected on the day’s events.

Frédéric Guesdon, the team’s director, noted that “Axel could have been there, but he was pushed aside… It was mostly about positioning, and some riders may still lack experience.” He further lamented the missed opportunity, stating, “Unfortunately, none of the big favorites were caught out… We missed that move, and from then on it became very complicated.”

Despite the challenges, the Groupama-FDJ team maintained their fighting spirit. Guesdon praised the team’s efforts, recognizing the uphill battle against the sport’s elite. “We tried to put things right, but we knew it would be difficult against the big guns,” he said. As the race reached its final stages, Madouas pushed through and held onto a competitive pace.

As the final climbs approached, Pogačar and Van der Poel surged ahead, leaving Madouas to chase down the remaining racers. Ultimately, he managed to contest for a top-15 finish, clinching 16th place after a sprint finish with fierce competition.

Reflecting on the day, Madouas expressed disappointment but recognized the team’s physical prowess. “I think we had a top 10 in our legs… the move on the Molenberg cost us dearly,” he noted. His sentiments echoed Guesdon’s assessment, reinforcing that although they faced setbacks, the team remains optimistic for their next challenge.

With the “Queen of the Classics” on the horizon, Groupama-FDJ looks to harness their potential and improve upon their performance, as the Flemish Classics continue to unfold.
