In a thrilling stage at the Itzulia Basque Country, Thompson showcased impressive tenacity, battling his way to a commendable tenth place. The day’s race began with a high-paced intensity, where multiple attacks kept the peloton on high alert, preventing the formation of an early breakaway. Thompson was actively engaged throughout, responding to aggressive moves while the main group worked to keep the advantage in check.
After around 70 kilometers of relentless competition, a select group finally broke away, with Thompson making the crucial move to join them. Within this breakaway, cooperation was vital to maintain their lead, as the terrain posed a significant challenge. Thompson skillfully managed his energy, ensuring he remained competitive as they approached the race’s climax.
As the final kilometers unfolded, the dynamics shifted, and the strongest contenders within the group began vying for victory. Post-race, Thompson reflected on his performance, expressing a blend of pride and disappointment: “I’m ending the stage with a bit of mixed feelings. I’m very aware of how rare these opportunities are to race for the win in a WorldTour race so I am a bit gutted not to get a better result from it. But I also need to be realistic. It was a big group with strong riders.”
Looking ahead, the upcoming fourth stage promises another challenge, spanning 167.2 kilometers around Galdakao, where Thompson’s resilience will undoubtedly be put to the test once more.
