No major role for Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women in In Flanders Fields

# Team Visma | Lease a Bike Faces Challenges at In Flanders Fields

This year’s thirteenth edition of the In Flanders Fields race took place in Wevelgem, where a grueling 135-kilometer course tested the cyclists. Starting flat, the route soon led into hilly terrain, featuring two ascents of the iconic Kemmelberg.

Early in the race, a breakaway of four riders formed, but the peloton kept them within striking distance. As the challenging climbs began, the breakaway was swept up, paving the way for a more selective lead group. Daniek Hengeveld was part of this elite group but unfortunately had to withdraw during the final climb of the Kemmelberg.

Meanwhile, teammate Nienke Veenhoven encountered misfortune as she crashed and was unable to continue. The leading group, which ultimately featured eventual winner Lorena Wiebes, continued to hold a significant advantage over the rest of the peloton.

Reflecting on her performance, Hengeveld said, “I was in a good position in the lead group, but unfortunately I had to drop back on the final ascent of the Kemmelberg. I had given a lot on the first climb, and I felt that later in the race.” Despite their challenges, she noted that back within the peloton, there was still hope for a top finish, but the gap only widened.

Team sports director Jos van Emden acknowledged the day’s difficulties: “Nienke crashed at a very unfortunate moment, which meant she couldn’t compete in the finale. Daniek showed herself at the front today. Once she had to drop back on the Kemmelberg, it was very difficult to get back. We had high expectations for this race, so there is some disappointment, but I’m satisfied with the way the riders raced. They gave everything.”

The results saw Lorena Wiebes from Team SD Worx – Protime triumphing with a time of 3:31:21, while Hengeveld finished 32nd, behind her teammates Imogen Wolff, Lieke Nooijen, and others, who also encountered setbacks during the race.

As Team Visma | Lease a Bike reflects on the day, their focus now shifts to upcoming competitions.
