Jorgenson and Van Aert battle to top-ten finish in Strade Bianche
# Jorgenson and Van Aert Solidify Positions in Top Ten at Strade Bianche
The iconic Strade Bianche event unfolded from Siena, featuring a demanding 203-kilometer course rich with 64 kilometers of unpaved gravel sectors. Early in the race, an escape group formed, including Tim Rex from Team Visma | Lease a Bike, who was eager to make his mark during his first season with the WorldTour squad. Despite their efforts, this early breakaway was reintegrated into the peloton about 80 kilometers from the finish, thanks to a rapid pace set by UAE Team Emirates-XRG.
Reflecting on his debut in the Strade Bianche, Rex, a 21-year-old Belgian, shared his experience: “It was a tough race, but I had fun. At the foot of Monte Sante Marie, the peloton came flying past us. I tried to hold on for a moment, but that’s where I hit my limit. I was already very happy to get the chance to start this beautiful race. It was a great experience.”
The Monte Sante Marie sector, a pivotal point in past editions, once again played a crucial role when world champion Pogačar launched a decisive attack. In the chasing group, Matteo Jorgenson, alongside Tom Pidcock, Isaac Del Toro, Romain Grégoire, and Paul Seixas, made notable advances. This group, later joined by Van Aert, attempted to close the gap to Pogačar but struggled to lessen the distance.
Pogačar ultimately claimed success with his third consecutive victory in the event. Following him were Seixas and Del Toro, who vied for the remaining podium spots. Jorgenson secured eighth place, while his teammate Van Aert clinched tenth.
Feeling reflective, Jorgenson expressed his thoughts on the race: “I’m satisfied with eighth place. At a crucial moment, I had a flat tire, but fortunately, Pietro (Mattio) was nearby to give me his bike. I’m extremely grateful to him for that. Shortly after, I was able to switch bikes just before Monte Sante Marie. By that point, I had already spent a lot of energy getting back, so I mainly tried to follow the high pace. After that, I decided to give everything and see where it would take me. Given the circumstances, I can live with this result.”
Echoing a sense of achievement, Van Aert stated, “I can absolutely live with a top-ten finish. I rode the race the way I had hoped. The decisive attack came on Monte Sante Marie, and that sector doesn’t lie. At that moment I felt I was just missing that little bit to follow the pace. It was a tough race, but it was certainly an encouraging performance given my difficult preparation. Now the goal is to ride a good Tirreno-Adriatico, after which I’ll turn my focus to Milan–San Remo.”
The results of the race reflected the intensity and competitive spirit, showcasing the prowess of each racer involved. In conclusion:
– **1st**: Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates – XRG) – 4:45:15
– **2nd**: Paul Seixas (Decathlon CMA CGM Team) – +1:00
