Last sprint before the queen stage in Oman

# Sprinting to the Summit: Anticipation Builds for Queen Stage at Tour of Oman

The fourth and penultimate stage of the Tour of Oman saw no unexpected twists on Tuesday, as riders traversed a flat 146 kilometers to Sohar, culminating in a predictable bunch sprint to determine the winner. Despite his efforts, Thibaud Gruel had to settle for 17th place, hampered by a challenging positioning strategy.

Stage four presented a unique course, completely devoid of significant elevation changes, with only a mere 150 meters of gain over 147 kilometers. As a result, a sprint finish was the anticipated outcome, with only two riders managing to establish a breakaway. “There was just a bit of wind, which meant that the peloton was quite stretched out,” noted Thierry Bricaud. “However, it wasn’t strong enough to create echelons, so it ended up being a fairly calm day.” The peloton allowed the two escapees to dangle before reeling them in with just three kilometers left to race.

Reflecting on the sprint, Bricaud explained, “The approach itself wasn’t too bad. The idea was not to be on the front row going into the corner located 1.5 kilometers from the finish. However, the guys were on the left-hand side, and since that was opposite to the wind direction, they unfortunately couldn’t find an opening in the final kilometer to go for the sprint. Thibaud therefore remained in the back.” Gruel’s positioning left him unable to contend, resulting in a finish far from the front, while Erlend Blikra seized victory.

On a brighter note, Bricaud was optimistic about the team’s performance, stating, “Aside from that, everyone had a pretty good day.” Looking ahead, he hinted at a tactical approach for the final stage at Green Mountain, emphasizing the importance of strategic decisions. “Rémy will try to do a strong final climb, and a breakaway could potentially go far. It will all depend on its composition, and we’ll need to stay alert,” he concluded.

With the queen stage approaching, all eyes turn toward the final climbs and the strategy that will unfold in this fiercely competitive race.
