ProTeam Arnaud De Lie and teammates test on cobbles and plug streets

# Lotto-Intermarché Prepares for Spring Classics with Rigorous Testing

Lotto-Intermarché is gearing up for the Spring Classics with a series of intense test days this week, focusing on three distinct terrains: the cobbles of Paris–Roubaix, the infamous plug streets of Gent-Wevelgem, and the challenging climbs seen in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and the Tour of Flanders. Performance manager Aike Visbeek shared, “We’re working around three scenarios… These are three types of terrain that place huge demands on equipment, making testing essential.”

The team kicked off their testing with Paris–Roubaix on the horizon, successfully completing their first day. Gent-Wevelgem was on the agenda for today, and with punctures being a common issue in the Paris-Roubaix race, Mikey van Kruiningen noted, “Punctures and Paris-Roubaix unfortunately often go hand in hand… we have to minimise that risk as much as possible.” Thankfully, all of the team’s riders, including Arnaud De Lie, Huub Artz, Cédric Beullens, Jenno Berckmoes, and Toon Aerts, emerged from the demanding conditions of Roubaix without incurring a single puncture.

### Tire Pressure Protocol

During the tests, the team utilized their Orbea bikes outfitted with Oquo RP50 wheels, which are designed to handle the rough terrain of Roubaix. They explored the maximum tyre width compatible with their frames, transitioning from last season’s 30 mm tyres to testing the new Vittoria Corsa Pro Control 32 mm prototype. Notably, this setup effectively reaches 34 mm when mounted on the wide rims. The team also experimented with a specifically developed Vittoria prototype tyre designed to reduce rolling resistance while providing additional protection.

Tyre pressure plays a crucial role as well. van Kruiningen highlighted, “A different width requires a different pressure than before.” To establish an effective protocol that dictates starting pressure in Compiègne and the subsequent pressure upon reaching Arenberg at the Forest of Wallers, the team consulted with Vittoria. This detailed approach allows them to make necessary adjustments with ample time ahead of the Opening Weekend.

### Building Confidence through Equipment

Riders are already expressing confidence as they get accustomed to the equipment. Visbeek confirmed, “Both Arnaud De Lie and Toon Aerts indicated that this setup gave them confidence to ride the muddy cobbled sectors at high speed.” Newcomer Huub Artz also benefitted from ride experiences, learning valuable insights from Cédric Beullens during their trials in Arenberg.

The day included further testing on the plug streets of Gent–Wevelgem, with tomorrow dedicated to the iconic climbs associated with the opening of the Spring Classics and the Tour of Flanders. Visbeek emphasized the significant value of these tests, stating, “These test moments are invaluable: they provide our performance team with a wealth of data and, just as importantly, they build rider confidence.”

With additional testing scheduled in the days and weeks to come, Visbeek concluded, “It’s reassuring to see that the strategies developed over the winter are now being confirmed during these sessions. That can only boost motivation heading into the spring.”

As the team prepares for the upcoming races, their meticulous attention to detail and equipment will be critical in navigating the challenging terrains that lie ahead.
