In an exhilarating turn of events at the Tour of Guangxi, riders Jørgen Nordhagen and Cian Uijtdebroeks showcased their talents in the grueling queen stage. After a series of flat sprint stages, stage five offered a stark contrast with its 165-kilometre route, featuring two significant climbs, including a demanding final ascent averaging nearly eight percent over three kilometres.
The day began with a breakaway group maintaining a steady lead against the peloton. However, the real competition heated up on the final climb. British rider Paul Double executed a powerful solo performance to capture the stage victory, crossing the finish line ahead of the pack. Both Nordhagen and Uijtdebroeks finished just eleven seconds behind Double, placing fourth and fifth respectively in a fragmented field. Their strong performance not only earned them podium positions on the stage but also improved their standings in the general classification, with Nordhagen now sitting fifth and Uijtdebroeks in sixth. Notably, Nordhagen has emerged as the new leader in the youth classification.
Reflecting on the day, Uijtdebroeks commented, “The legs felt good today. This was clearly the toughest stage of the race. With the difficult finish, our plan as a team was to focus on the final climb. I felt strong, the legs were there, but unfortunately the win was just out of reach.”
