Johan Jacobs so close to the top-10

# Johan Jacobs Just Misses Top 10 at SUPER 8 Classic

This past Saturday, the SUPER 8 Classic in Belgium mirrored the competitive spirit of the Spring Classics that Johan Jacobs holds dear. The 28-year-old Swiss rider showcased his grit between Brakel and Haacht, particularly during the crucial moments nearly 80 kilometers from the finish line. Despite a valiant effort, Jacobs finished the race in eleventh place during the final sprint.

The peloton maneuvered south around Brussels for a challenging 200-kilometer course, punctuated by around fifteen hills that complicated the prospects for a traditional bunch sprint. “There was a strong startlist, and we could expect an offensive race,” noted team member William Green. “Our objective was mainly around Paul and Cyril, but Lewis and Johan also had an open role on the circuit.”

Early in the race, a breakaway of four riders formed, but tension escalated as the terrain grew more challenging around the second half of the race. “It’s exactly what we expected,” said William. “Some were focused on the circuit, but it was hard beforehand, and when Visma-Lease a Bike went very hard, we had Paul and Johan in a group of about thirty riders. Unfortunately, the pace was very high, and Paul couldn’t sustain it.”

Jacobs proved to be a formidable competitor, making a strong showing in a faster group of about twenty riders. “Johan did a really great ride,” Green emphasized. Teams with multiple riders were able to control the pace, allowing Jacobs to conserve energy. However, as the race progressed, Arnaud De Lie made a significant attempt to break away, placing further pressure on Jacobs.

As they approached the final stages, Jacobs fought hard to maintain his position. “Entering the second lap, some teams started to close the gap, and we were trying to take advantage of that if it did come back because we had Cyril there,” Green explained. Ultimately, the early breakaway rejoined, leading to a final showdown among the top twenty riders.

Although Jacobs made a commendable effort in the sprint, he concluded the race just outside the top ten in eleventh place. “It’s not every day that he is in this scenario but finishing in the top 10 was a realistic goal for us,” Green remarked. “He’s just outside (11th)… The day’s balance is positive. Paul also showed during the early attacks that the mindset is there and it’s a good sign ahead of the Grand Prix d’Isbergues tomorrow.”

Reflecting on his performance, Jacobs’ experience at the SUPER 8 Classic serves as a stepping stone for future challenges, highlighting both his potential and the collective strength of his team.
