Mixed feelings on day 2

# Emotional Rollercoaster for Groupama-FDJ on Stage 2 of La Vuelta

The Groupama-FDJ cycling team experienced a whirlwind of emotions on Sunday during the second stage of La Vuelta. Heartache struck early with the abandonment of Guillaume Martin-Guyonnet following a crash in the rain, leading to feelings of loss for the team. However, these sentiments transformed into joy as David Gaudu secured a stunning third place at the summit finish in Limone Piemonte, setting him up in third place overall by Sunday evening.

The second stage featured an impressive 160 kilometers of racing, culminating at an altitude of 1,400 meters in Limone Piemonte. The final ten-kilometer climb was expected to challenge the riders, particularly the last two steep kilometers with an average grade of 8%. Despite the initial calm, the weather took a turn fifty kilometers from the finish, which proved to be disastrous for Martin-Guyonnet. “Unfortunately, the rain came at the wrong time, in a hilly and quite technical part of the course, with quite a few roundabouts,” said Frédéric Guesdon, reflecting on the hazard that led to their loss. Sadly, Martin-Guyonnet crashed early on and could not continue.

“It’s always important to start with a good momentum,” noted David Gaudu, who faced challenges of his own as the weather worsened. “I was paralyzed,” he admitted, expressing his anxiety about racing in treacherous conditions. Yet, as the stage progressed, Gaudu managed to navigate the dangerous segment of the course and prepare for the climb.

Despite numerous crashes affecting the peloton, Gaudu maintained his focus and strength during the final climb. The field remained tightly packed, with nearly half the riders still in contention as they approached the finish line. As the final two kilometers began, Gaudu strategically positioned himself among the top contenders, eventually following Jonas Vingegaard and Giulio Ciccone into the final sprint. Crossing the finish line in third place, Gaudu reflected, “I wanted to get a result for Guillaume… it worked out, and I’m really happy. This allows us to start this Vuelta the right way.”

Frédéric Guesdon was equally pleased but noted the complexity of emotions surrounding the day. “The feelings are mixed,” he shared. “Despite David’s great performance, we’re obviously sad to lose Guillaume, who was motivated and in good shape for this Vuelta.”

As the team anticipates the next stage towards Ceres, the insights from Sunday’s challenges and triumphs will likely reverberate throughout their strategy for the remainder of the competition. David Gaudu’s podium finish not only boosts his confidence but also serves as a rallying point for the entire Groupama-FDJ team as they navigate the trials of this Grand Tour.
