Thibaud Gruel narrowly misses the podium

# Thibaud Gruel Just Misses Podium Finish at Tour de Pologne

In an eventful fourth stage of the Tour de Pologne on Thursday, heading towards Cieszyn, Thibaud Gruel of Groupama-FDJ showcased his climbing prowess in a challenging uphill sprint. Despite a fierce competition, Gruel finished a commendable fourth, just shy of a podium position.

Following a dramatic day around Wałbrzych, where a crash led to the neutralization of the race and a reshuffling of the peloton, the focus shifted to the straightforward yet demanding 200-kilometer stage in Cieszyn. Jussi, the team’s director, noted, “We knew there wouldn’t be much action because there are quite a few sprinters in the peloton, and it wasn’t worth taking the breakaway.” This strategic decision proved wise, as only three Polish riders managed to break away early in the race.

With approximately fifty kilometers remaining, the breakaway dwindled down to just one rider, Filip Maciejuk, maintaining a narrow advantage. The race’s final climb of 700 meters at a 4% gradient presented a critical challenge, emphasizing the importance of effective teamwork and positioning. “It’s one of the stages we had targeted with Thibaud,” appreciated Jussi.

As the race neared its end, the Groupama-FDJ team secured a prominent position in the peloton, ensuring Gruel was well-positioned for the final push. The intensity of the circuit, described as “very, very technical,” required precise execution, a task successfully managed by the team’s riders, notably Clément Davy and Enzo Paleni.

With just under 2,500 meters remaining, Gruel found himself leading the pack alongside his teammate. “The circuit was fast, there was a lot of fighting for position, and it was much more than just a sprint,” Gruel said, acknowledging the assistance he received from his teammates throughout the race.

Ultimately, Gruel launched his sprint at the right moment but fell just short of securing a podium spot, finishing in fourth place after a tight photo finish. “It’s satisfying still, because I couldn’t have done much better,” he reflected. This finish marks a significant achievement for Gruel, matching his best result in the WorldTour at the Tour of the Basque Country earlier this year.

Looking ahead, Jussi expressed confidence in Gruel’s potential: “We trusted him on Tuesday, again today, and he shows that he is on the right track, in terms of progression and form.” The team is poised to continue supporting Gruel as they gear up for the next stage, hoping for another opportunity that suits their strategy.
