Tom Donnenwirth secures his maiden pro win

# Tom Donnenwirth Triumphs in Maiden Professional Victory

Tom Donnenwirth will forever mark the 6th of August as a pivotal day in his cycling career. Competing in the opening stage of the Tour de l’Ain and surmounting the challenging Col de Portes, the 27-year-old rider clinched his first professional victory on Wednesday. With Groupama-FDJ at the WorldTour level since this season, Donnenwirth capped off an outstanding team effort, sprinting to victory ahead of teammate David Gaudu, also a past winner of the Tour de l’Ain, and Lorenzo Germani, who secured fourth place.

This year’s Tour de l’Ain proved tougher for sprinters than in previous editions. The initial stage, typically favorable to sprinters, posed substantial challenges right from the start. The Col de Portes (14.6 km at 5.4%), positioned just 40 kilometers from the finish, served as the day’s key hurdle. A breakaway trio had formed early on, establishing a two-minute buffer over the peloton. However, as they approached the climb, the riders began to drop back, setting the stage for dramatic shifts in the race.

Reflecting on the climb, Donnenwirth shared, “I really had to manage my effort because my legs were really hurting, and the goal for me was to not go above my limits so that I could make a good sprint at the finish.” He noted the fine form he had felt during a prior training ride, confident in his abilities, particularly on a route tailored to his strengths.

As the race dynamics evolved, Visma-Lease a Bike initiated a strong push, culminating in three riders splitting away from the main pack. Groupama-FDJ kept their composure amid the intense competition. “We didn’t panic,” remarked teammate Yvon Caër. “We knew Lorenzo would be able to close the gap on the descent.”

Indeed, Germani’s impressive descent brought the chasing group back together after crossing the summit of the Col de Portes twenty seconds behind the leaders. With Donnenwirth among the squad that closed in on the breakaway, the team’s strategy unfolded perfectly. As the finish line approached, Donnenwirth praised his teammates, saying, “They told me I could win, that I was one of the fastest guys in the peloton. The whole team was really great all day.”

With two kilometers to go, the chase intensified. Thanks to Clément Braz Afonso’s efforts, the breakaway was reeled in. Just after the iconic “flamme rouge,” the Groupama-FDJ train surged to the front, leading the pack into the final corner.

In a climactic finish, Lorenzo Germani launched Donnenwirth and Gaudu, resulting in a spectacular one-two finish. “It was a textbook finish,” said Donnenwirth, beaming with joy. “I just had to sprint hard, finish it off, and it worked. It’s just pure joy. It’s a day I will always remember, that’s for sure.” He emphasized the collective effort of the team, hoping that this moment would signal a turning point in his season.

Symbolically celebrating his achievement, Donnenwirth raised his arms in victory alongside Gaudu, who finished second. Yvon Caër praised the team’s unified effort, reflecting, “We trusted Tom, and it paid off, but I also want to highlight the work of his teammates because everyone stepped up when needed.”

As he heads into the second stage of the Tour de l’Ain sporting the yellow jersey, the cycling world is keenly watching what’s next for Tom Donnenwirth, hopeful that this maiden victory will pave the way for further successes this season.
