Münsterland Giro: Jordi Meeus sprints to second place

Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe came close to celebrating a home win at the Münsterland Giro this year. In the end, team sprinter Jordi Meeus finished a brilliant second, only beaten by fellow Belgian Jasper Philipsen. The Münsterland Giro is one of Germany’s most important one-day races and also marks the end of the German racing season. Accordingly, Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe had set high goals for their home race. The objective: to secure a top result with the fast classics specialists Danny van Poppel (Netherlands) and Jordi Meeus (Belgium). And they delivered: as the race came down to a mass sprint after 202 kilometers, the Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe lead-out train was perfectly positioned. Jordi Meeus even briefly took the lead but was overtaken by Jasper Philipsen in the final meters. Danny van Poppel completed the strong team performance by finishing sixth.ResultFrom the finish line“It was a very hectic race with a lot of wind. Our goal was to focus everything on the sprint, and we succeeded. Danny gave me a perfect lead-out, but unfortunately, another rider was just a bit faster than me today. I’m happy with this podium finish.” – Jordi Meeus“I think it was a really strong team performance all day. The plan was to position Danny and Jordi well for the final sprint, and it worked out perfectly. In the end, it was a perfectly executed sprint with a great lead-out, and both riders showed strong performances to find the right gap 300 meters before the finish. Jasper Philipsen has definitely been the sprinter of the season, so to come so close as a team today is something we’re happy with. Overall, we’re very pleased with the result.” – Roger Hammond, Sports DirectorPhoto: SprintCyclingAgency
