Groupama-FDJ Riders Secure Strong Results in Tour of the Basque Country Time Trial
The 2024 Tour of the Basque Country kicked off in Irun with a challenging time trial that saw Romain Grégoire and David Gaudu from the Groupama-FDJ cycling team deliver solid performances. Despite facing a technical and explosive course, both riders finished in the top 25, showcasing their strength and determination in the race.
One of the team’s coaches, Maxime Latourte, highlighted the demanding nature of the time trial course, stating, “[It was] short but quite balanced. Powerful riders could express themselves, but you also had to be good technically.” The route featured city cobblestones, rolling terrain, and a demanding climb, making it a test of both physical and technical abilities for the cyclists.
Both Grégoire and Gaudu put in impressive efforts during the time trial, with Grégoire finishing 19th and Gaudu in 22nd place, just behind the race leaders. Despite facing stiff competition, the riders managed to hold their own and remain in contention for the upcoming stages of the race.
Maxime commended the riders for their performances, noting, “David did a good time trial, and he managed it quite well. Romain did more or less the same trial, and only made a small mistake in the double bend at the start.” The riders’ ability to navigate the challenging course and maintain their positions despite some setbacks reflects their determination and skill on the bike.
Looking ahead to the rest of the race, Grégoire expressed optimism about the team’s position, stating, “We’ll be able to take advantage of this position to try things and take advantage of being two in the mix to get a stage win and/or a good position overall.” With a challenging terrain awaiting them on the next stage towards Cambo-les-Bains, the Groupama-FDJ riders are poised to continue their strong showing in the Tour of the Basque Country and showcase their competitive spirit.
