Zoe Bäckstedt Dominates U23 European Cyclo-Cross Championships

Zoe Bäckstedt, the talented cyclist, has added another title to her already impressive list of accomplishments. Bäckstedt won the U23 European cyclo-cross championship in Pont-Chatéau, France, showcasing her skills and dominance in the sport. This victory comes after her gold medal win in the U23 individual time trial back in September.

The European Cyclo-cross championships faced extreme wind and weather conditions, which forced the competition to be condensed into just two days. Despite the challenging conditions, Bäckstedt had a strong start and led from the beginning. After a closely fought battle with Luxembourg rider Marie Schreiber, Bäckstedt pulled away and finished with a commanding solo win, crossing the finish line 34 seconds ahead of her closest competitor.

Reflecting on her victory, Bäckstedt expressed her satisfaction with the course and her performance. She commented, “I felt good during the course recon, and I enjoyed the course… The plan was to sit in the wheel and wait as late as possible to attack, but I felt good from the start, and it was a power course, so I took the opportunity early on to take the lead.”

Bäckstedt also acknowledged the challenges of the muddy parts of the course, stating, “There were only a couple of parts early in the course that were super muddy, and it was impossible to know which line to take as it was so deep. You could see that there were stones in it, too, making it even harder to judge where to go. It was a ‘ride into it and hope you make it out’ kind of thing!”

The U23 title holds great significance for Bäckstedt, who expressed her excitement despite not being able to race in the jersey in any races. She said, “It feels AWESOME to win the U23 title! Although I can’t race in the jersey in any races, it’s still super cool to have won it. I worked hard for this goal, and I’m really pleased to take this jersey home.”

Bäckstedt’s next challenge will be the World Cup in Dendermonde on Sunday, 12 November, where she will undoubtedly continue to showcase her talent and strive for excellence in the sport of cyclo-cross.
