Riley Sheehan, the New American Sensation, Wins the 117th Paris-Tours

In a thrilling and unpredictable race, Riley Sheehan, a 23-year-old trainee with Israel-Premier Tech, emerged as the surprise winner of the 117th Paris-Tours. Sheehan clinched victory in a close sprint against his breakaway companions, securing his first-ever win and making history for the United States as the country’s first winner on Avenue de Grammont. Second place went to Lewis Askey of Groupama – FDJ, who put in a heroic performance throughout the race. Tobias Halland Johannessen of Uno X finished third.

The race started with 157 riders setting off from the shadow of the Chartres Cathedral under bright sunlight. Emotions ran high as several riders, including Greg Van Avermaet and Tony Gallopin, participated in their last race before retiring. After more than thirty kilometers of high-speed racing, a group of five riders broke away, including Lewis Askey, Théo Delacroix, Joseph Rosskopf, Maxime Jarnet, and Axel Narbonne Zuccarelli. Despite the efforts of other teams to control the offensive, it was Askey who held a strong resistance and led the race for the majority of the day.

The unpredictable nature of the race became apparent in the first vineyard path, Limeray, as mechanical issues and crashes caused chaos among the peloton. Christophe Laporte’s Jumbo-Visma team, Arnaud De Lie’s Lotto Dstny team, and Jordi Meeus’ Bora-Hansgrohe team faced setbacks, leaving the door open for multiple attacks and punctures. Askey continued to display his heroic performance, fending off various challenges from riders like Biniam Girmay, Matteo Trentin, and John Degenkolb. However, he was caught on the last difficulty of the day, the Rochecobron climb, by a group of four breakaway riders.

Olivier Le Gac, Tobias Halland Johannessen, Riley Sheehan, and Joris Delbove formed the breakaway group, which held their ground and contested the victory. Despite the efforts of the Arkea Samsic team to close the gap, Sheehan, with his impressive strength, emerged as the strongest in an intense sprint. His victory marked a significant milestone for the United States in the history of Paris-Tours racing.

Sheehan’s win comes as a surprise to many, but his performance showcases his potential as a rising star in the cycling world. With this victory under his belt, he has established himself as a force to be reckoned with. The future looks bright for this young American talent, and his win serves as an inspiration for aspiring cyclists in the United States.
