Maike van der Duin Claims Silver Medal in Scratch Race at UCI World Championships
Maike van der Duin of the Netherlands secured a silver medal in the scratch race at the UCI World Championships in Glasgow. Van der Duin demonstrated patience during the race, making her move in the final two laps and positioning herself perfectly for the bunch sprint. Despite a valiant effort, she narrowly missed out on victory as Jennifer Valente of the USA crossed the finish line with less than half a bike length ahead.
Reflecting on her performance, van der Duin expressed satisfaction with her silver medal, saying, “I’m really happy with this result. Of course, I wanted to win, but I got silver, and I’m happy with it.” She anticipated a bunch sprint given the start list and predicted a late attack and a high pace towards the end of the race. Van der Duin found herself on the wheel of Fidanza, a two-time world champion, and when Valente overtook, she expected Fidanza to accelerate. However, she had to make her own move when Fidanza didn’t, ultimately falling just short of victory.
Van der Duin still has two track events ahead, the Madison and Omnium, taking place in the second week of the competition. Meanwhile, Chloé Dygert of the USA will participate in round two of the team pursuit on Saturday, August 5. Van der Duin’s next track event is scheduled for Monday, August 7.
Despite not having the best preparation due to illness, van der Duin remains optimistic for the upcoming races, hoping to improve and achieve good results.
