Juan Ayuso reflects on his performance at the Vuelta: “I have to come back next year!”
In an interview following Stage 20 of the Vuelta a España, professional cyclist Juan Ayuso expressed his determination to return next year after narrowly missing out on a podium finish. Ayuso, who currently wears the white jersey, acknowledged his disappointment in not achieving his initial objectives but still considered the race a success.
Ayuso revealed his frustration at not being able to join the breakaway, saying, “When I saw the break go, we knew it was not coming back, and I had two teammates who could have a good try. Of course, on my side, being a bit selfish, it was a bit of a pity because I really wanted to try but it is what it is and I have to come back next year!”
Despite missing out on winning a stage or securing a podium position, Ayuso highlighted his strong performance on the last climb, where he successfully responded to attacks from Mikel Landa and Enric Mas. “I felt good,” Ayuso remarked, indicating that his form was promising for future races.
Reflecting on his overall experience at the Vuelta, Ayuso compared it to his previous year’s campaign, stating, “Last year, I wore the white jersey for almost all the race but it was actually never really mine. This year, I’m gonna be able to celebrate in Madrid with it.” The white jersey is awarded to the best young rider in the race, making it a significant achievement for the 19-year-old Spanish cyclist.
While Ayuso fell short of his initial goals, he remains optimistic and determined to improve in the future. He closed the interview by expressing his satisfaction with the overall performance in the Vuelta, saying, “I think overall it’s been a good Vuelta and at least I take the white jersey.”
