Lorenzo Germani escapes to Angliru
In an action-packed stage at the Vuelta, 21-year-old Lorenzo Germani showcased his skills by taking the lead in the seventeenth stage, which culminated in the famous Angliru climb. Germani fought hard to secure his place in the breakaway and found himself in the company of Remco Evenepoel for a brief period. However, he was eventually caught and brought back by the peloton in the penultimate climb. Despite this, Germani’s performance earned him praise and he expressed his enjoyment of the stage.
“The start was very fast, as expected,” said Germani. “I was a bit lucky to be in the breakaway. It was a nice day, and being in front with Remco was really cool, but it was also hard. I’m happy and I hope to continue like this.”
His team, Groupama-FDJ, had strategized to conserve energy for the upcoming stage, which is more suited for breakaways. “Lorenzo did a very good stage, but above all we wanted to keep as much energy as possible for tomorrow. Our riders are in pretty good shape and recovering very well,” explained Benoît Vaugrenard, a member of the team.
The stage ultimately saw Primoz Roglic claiming victory and Sepp Kuss retaining the red jersey. However, the riders of Groupama-FDJ were not involved in the final climb up Angliru. Tomorrow’s stage promises another challenging summit finish with more than 4,500 meters of elevation gain towards La Cruz de Linares.
