Remco Evenepoel Reflects on Three Victories in a Remarkable Vuelta a España
September 14th, 2023 – Remco Evenepoel, a Belgian professional cyclist, expressed his joy and gratitude after securing three stage victories in what he described as “the most beautiful stages” of the Vuelta a España.
Evenepoel dedicated his latest victory to his wife, Oumi, stating, “The heart on the line was for Oumi, my wife. This victory was for her.” He believed he was the strongest cyclist in the group and capitalized on his form to secure the win without wasting any time. Reflecting on his performance, he said, “The legs were super good today, a bit like in stage 14. It’s an amazing stage to win again.”
The young cyclist also emphasized his determination to chase the King of the Mountains (KOM) points to secure the mountain jersey. He proudly shared, “I wanted to chase the [KOM] points for my jersey, I took all the points, and then my third stage win.”
Evenepoel acknowledged a challenging period during the second week of the race but remained positive, saying, “After my off day in Formigal and Tourmalet, I just had to turn the page and go for stages.” Despite not achieving his original goal in the General Classification (GC), he expressed his satisfaction and pride, stating, “It has been an amazing Vuelta even though the GC plan didn’t work out. I think we can be very proud.”
He concluded by highlighting the importance of his strong finish, indicating that it demonstrated his continual improvement as a cyclist. Evenepoel expressed optimism, stating, “To finish with such a good feeling and with such legs shows that I’m still improving.” He encouraged his team and supporters to focus on the positives, stating, “We should just be happy and proud.”
