Matej Mohorič Retains Yellow Jersey at Tour of Poland Despite Tragic Incident
Team Bahrain Victorious’ Matej Mohorič continued to dominate at the Tour of Poland, holding onto the yellow jersey after an eventful Stage 5. While Mohorič secured a second-place finish, the race was overshadowed by a tragic incident involving a motorbike pilot losing control and crashing into spectators.
With just 7 kilometers remaining, the motorbike pilot collided with supporters, trapping a young girl underneath the machine. The leading riders witnessed the harrowing incident and understandably lost motivation to compete for victory in the closing stages of the race.
Despite the somber atmosphere, a subdued sprint took place, with Marijn van den Berg of EF Education – EasyPost taking the win. Mohorič finished in third place, followed closely by João Almeida of UAE Team Emirates.
The focus of the day shifted from racing to the welfare of the injured spectators. Mohorič expressed his concern, stating, “My heart sank, and I wasn’t thinking about the sprint at all, I was thinking about the people that were involved and I just hope everybody is alright.”
Earlier in the race, Bahrain Victorious displayed impeccable teamwork and strategy, carefully managing the makeup of the breakaway and maintaining a significant lead. Kamil Gradek led the peloton for over 100 kilometers, showcasing an impressive performance.
With a 12-second lead in the general classification, Mohorič will enter tomorrow’s individual time trial in Katowice as the overall leader. Although he acknowledges that competitors like Almeida and Michal Kwiatkowski are favorites, Mohorič is determined to give his best performance: “I have really good legs, so you never know.”
As the cycling community reflects on the tragic accident, the thoughts and wishes of Team Bahrain Victorious are with those affected by the incident.
