Australian cyclist Jarrad Drizners has recently signed with the Lotto Soudal team, marking a significant milestone in his career. The 22-year-old, hailing from Adelaide, South Australia, made the transition from Hagens Berman Axeon to Lotto Soudal, signing a two-year contract.
“I am still a bit in disbelief. I am so excited but nervous as well,” Drizners expressed his feelings about the new opportunity. He admitted that he did not anticipate the move, especially since 2021 was not his best season. However, his recent performances caught the attention of Lotto Soudal. “Since the Tour de l’Avenir, I am riding at a high level. That was so devastating, heartbreaking,” Drizners lamented a near-podium finish in the Liège-Bastogne-Liège U23 race.
General manager of Lotto Soudal, John Lelangue, spoke highly of Drizners and his capabilities. “Jarrad will add depth to the current Lotto Soudal roster as he excels in short climbs, crosswinds, and bunch sprints,” Lelangue noted. “He has a big engine and likes the Belgian races. Jarrad will bring a lot of potential to the team.”
Drizners himself is keen to explore his strengths as a cyclist. “I still need to find out which kind of rider I am. I would say a puncher, a classics rider. I love Belgian races and I like sprints, most likely because of my background as a track rider,” he explained. The opportunity to work alongside renowned sprinter Caleb Ewan has fueled his motivation. “If I just could play a little part in one of his victories, that would make me the happiest man in the world,” Drizners expressed his aspiration.
Drizners will be concluding his 2021 season in France at the Circuit des Ardennes before commencing preparations for his debut season with Lotto Soudal.
