The French doping authority (AFLD) has dropped the case against cyclist Lennert Van Eetvelt after he was able to provide evidence justifying the use of his nasal spray. The authority accepted his explanation and the matter is now closed, allowing Van Eetvelt to resume competition.
The AFLD had requested clarification regarding a substance found in Van Eetvelt’s urine during a check in February. However, it was determined that the substance was an authorized ingredient in a nasal spray that is allowed in competition as long as it is reported and used according to the instructions.
Van Eetvelt had listed the nasal spray on the doping form and used it under the guidance of his doctor. He explained, “I use this nasal spray sporadically in consultation with the doctor. It was therefore a surprise to me that the AFLD asked questions, because frankly I shouldn’t have to account for using it.” He further clarified that the substance found in his urine was a result of medical use to treat his allergies.
Lotto Dstny, Van Eetvelt’s team, expressed satisfaction with the quick resolution of the case. CEO Stéphane Heulot stated, “We were never worried… We are very happy that the AFLD has followed up this case so quickly and the file can be closed after only three weeks with no further consequences for Lennert.”
Van Eetvelt will be returning to competition on May 24 in the Alpes Isère Tour. He will not be making any further comments on the matter.
