Giacomo Nizzolo Places Second in Heistse Pijl Race After Giro d’Italia DNF

In a nerve-wracking edition of the Heistse Pijl race in Belgium, Italian cyclist Giacomo Nizzolo secured a second-place finish. Fellow cyclist Guillaume Boivin also had a solid performance, finishing eighth in the race.

Nizzolo’s participation marked his return to racing following an unfortunate Did Not Finish (DNF) in the Giro d’Italia. Reflecting on his performance, Nizzolo admitted that he wasn’t in optimal form yet. He said, “I did not have the legs to sprint better than I did, and that made the difference between winning and podiuming today.”

Nizzolo’s positioning was excellent as he approached the final climb over the Heistseberg, a 400-meter ascent with a 5% average gradient located just one kilometer from the finish line. With the help of Boivin, who provided superb support, Nizzolo entered the hill in third position. Boivin himself finished in eighth place.

Describing his race strategy on the descent, Nizzolo explained, “In the descent, I was together with two other riders. We had a gap over the small second group, but it was too early to launch the sprint. I waited as long as I could but also opened up first.”

Nizzolo accurately characterized the race as “very hectic and nervous.” The final 15 kilometers were plagued with crashes, including one involving cyclist Itamar Einhorn, who managed to complete the race despite the incident. Additionally, Rick Zabel had an unfortunate fall and did not finish. A decision regarding his participation in the Brussels Cycling Classic will be made by IPT management.
