Team Jumbo-Visma Successfully Concludes Tour de Pologne with Stage Win and Mixed Results
Team Jumbo-Visma finished their week in Poland with a stage win and mixed results in the General Classification (GC) of the Tour de Pologne. Olav Merlier secured the stage win in stage four, meeting the team’s primary goal for the race. However, their hopes for a high GC finish were dashed early on, leading them to shift their focus to individual performances within the team.
Sports director Maarten Wynants reflected on the team’s performance, stating, “We came here to get a stage win with Olav. He won stage four after finishing second in the opening stage, so our goal was achieved.” He acknowledged that the team had aimed for a sprint victory in stage five but found the stage too challenging. Wynants added, “In retrospect, it was a great opportunity, but we can’t win every day.”
For the GC, the team initially planned to support Tobias Foss and Koen Bouwman. However, after the second and third stages, it became evident that a high GC finish was unlikely. Sam Oomen was the highest-placed rider for Team Jumbo-Visma in 26th place. Regarding Foss’s individual time trial performance, Wynants commented, “His ninth place was okay. He can look forward to the World time trial Championships in Glasgow with confidence.”
In the final stage, the team opted for a cautious approach, not taking any risks. Tosh Van der Sande was the first Jumbo-Visma rider to cross the line, finishing in 13th place. Overall, it was a successful week for the team, accomplishing their stage win goal and gaining valuable experience for their riders.
The Tour de Pologne concluded with Matej Mohorič claiming the overall victory. Jumbo-Visma’s Sam Oomen finished in 26th place in the final GC standings.
