21-Year-Old Joe Blackmore Triumphs in Tour du Rwanda on His Birthday, Takes Yellow Jersey

Joe Blackmore celebrated his 21st birthday in remarkable fashion by claiming victory in stage 6 of the Tour du Rwanda on Mont Kigali, securing the race leader’s yellow jersey with two stages remaining.

Reflecting on his win, Blackmore humorously remarked, “Some good birthday watts today.” He added, “I didn’t expect the yellow jersey to be dropped but as he swung off, I bridged across to the next group so he was distanced straight away.” Blackmore’s strategic sprint in the final kilometer propelled him to success, surpassing his competitors Ilkhan Dostiyev and Jhonatan Restrepo on the General Classification leaderboard.

Organization Director, Ruben Plaza praised the team’s performance, stating, “I think we rode superbly today and the plan worked perfectly. Although Joe won the stage, I think we can say that more than 50 per cent of the reason why was Moritz. This morning we said to Moritz that he’d be the key rider today and he proved it.”

With the upcoming stages holding new challenges, Plaza expresses the team’s readiness, mentioning, “Tomorrow is a completely different day. We are going to need all of our guys to be ready to defend the jersey.”

This victory adds to an impressive performance by the Israeli Premier Tech team in the race, following earlier success by Itamar Einhorn. The Tour du Rwanda continues to showcase thrilling competition and unexpected outcomes as it progresses.
