2026 cycling season kicked off with the Tour Down Under prologue
# 2026 Cycling Season Opens with Tour Down Under Prologue
The 2026 cycling season has officially begun with the Tour Down Under, featuring a prologue that marked only the second instance in its history where the stage race commenced with a time trial. Riders took on a challenging 3.6-kilometer flat course in Adelaide, yet the Dutch team, Team Visma | Lease a Bike, could not muster a strong challenge for top placements despite demonstrating competitive intermediate times early on.
Matthew Brennan and Filippo Fiorelli initially impressed at the first intermediate checkpoint but ultimately finished the prologue behind the winner, Samuel Watson, by margins of nine and fifteen seconds, respectively. Brennan was the standout performer for Team Visma | Lease a Bike, securing 29th place overall.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, sports director Jesper Mørkøv commented, “All things considered, we got off to a solid start. The plan was to go full gas from the start. We managed to do that, but it was clear that it was a bit too fast for Matthew and Filippo. They lost time in the second part of the prologue, which is unfortunate. The other guys also did what was expected of them.”
Team Visma | Lease a Bike, which comprises riders Anton Schiffer, Menno Huising, Per Strand Hagenes, Pietro Mattio, and Tim Rex alongside Brennan and Fiorelli, has been in Oceania for two weeks. “We have been here for about two weeks now, and the atmosphere within the group is good. Over the coming days, we’ll be targeting a stage win. Matthew is the perfect candidate for that,” Mørkøv concluded.
As the cyclists gear up for the next stages of the Santos Tour Down Under, fans and team members alike are eager to see how strategy and teamwork will unfold in pursuit of stage victories in the coming days.
