Tom Donnenwirth just short of the podium

# Tom Donnenwirth Falls Just Short of Podium at Paris–Camembert

In a remarkable comeback following a disappointing performance at La Roue Tourangelle, Tom Donnenwirth showcased his resilience this Tuesday at the 87th edition of Paris–Camembert. Competing against a challenging field on the hilly terrain of Normandy, Donnenwirth found himself in a decisive breakaway that carried him to a strong fourth-place finish.

The race, stretching nearly 200 kilometers with steep climbs in the final sixty kilometers, began with a relatively slow pace as the peloton chased five riders who had entered an early break. Tanguy Turgis, a key member of Donnenwirth’s team, noted, “Maximilian [Cushway] went to pull at the front of the peloton after 70 kilometers. Coming back from injury, he did a really great job and protected the team very well before we reached the circuit.”

As the race intensified, Tom expressed, “Our goal was to make the race harder…” He credited his team’s strategy in navigating the challenging climbs, positioning them well for potential attacks.

With just over 50 kilometers remaining, Turgis mentioned that initial attacks were launched to end the breakaway. Donnenwirth capitalized on a moment of recovery among his rivals, stating, “I took advantage of a small lull to go clear with five other riders.” His decision paid off as they established a lead of more than 45 seconds over the peloton.

Despite tactical instructions to conserve energy, Donnenwirth found himself evaluating his options as the race progressed. “The instructions were clear…to save as much energy as possible,” he explained. The collaboration of the breakaway group, however, kept the competition tight, and with two kilometers to go, Pierre Gautherat executed a surprise attack, claiming victory just ahead of the chasing group.

“The podium was really close,” Donnenwirth shared, reflecting on his fourth-place finish. “I might still be lacking a bit of strength at the end of races, but the podium was really close. It’s frustrating, because I would have really liked to finish on the podium of such a nice race.” Turgis echoed the sentiment, noting the small regrets, but acknowledged that “it’s the second time in three days that he’s been in contention for the win.”

Looking forward, Donnenwirth expressed optimism about his form and upcoming races, stating, “At least it confirms that I’m in good shape… Step by step, I’m getting closer, and I hope the win will come soon.” Turgis added, “We came close to a top result again—we have to keep pushing—but I’m happy with the day. With this young team, we showed aggressiveness, determination, and a great attitude.”

As the team moves forward, Donnenwirth’s growing consistency and competitive edge signal promising potential in the racing season ahead.
