Gloag takes emotional victory in queen stage Czech Tour
The third stage of the Czech stage race was referred to as the queen stage because of the tricky final climb to Dlouhe Strane. At the foot of the climb, Gloag placed an attack and the Brit immediately seized twenty seconds. In the group behind, classification leader Marc Hirschi tried to close the gap, but Gloag held on and took an emotional victory. It was the team’s 22nd victory of the season.”This is indescribable, I didn’t expect this at all”, Gloag said afterwards. “For me it was already a victory that I was at the start here. So for me to take the win here is a huge bonus.” Gloag was hit by a car in August last year and broke his kneecap. After a recovery of almost a year, he made his return to racing in the Czech Republic.

“It has been an incredibly difficult year. Fortunately, I have great people around me who have pulled me through. I want to thank everyone who has been there for me, without them I would not be standing here”, said Gloag, who finally feels like a cyclist again. “I hope I can show more great things this season.”Sports director Robert Wagner is extremely happy after Gloag’s win. “When you see how far he had to come back, this is really special. Tom is a fighter. I think it’s impressive that he went into the race so aggressively today. He could also have stayed in the group and seen where he would finish. He rode solo for eight kilometres on a steep 12-kilometre climb and didn’t keep the least riders behind him. Super strong.”
